No 1 Sawmill Camp

This house was built in the early days of the settlement. Mr and Mrs Walton lived here. The house was purchased from the Wallarah Coal Company, however the land was always owned by the coal company. Their grandson Joey Warren came to live permanently with his grandmother after the death of his grandfather. Husband and wife had been travelling home by bus from Newcastle when Mr Walton decided to get off and go to the toilet in Belmont. He told his wife that he would catch the next bus home, he never arrived. As he crossed the Pacific Highway he was struck by a car with only one headlight.

Joey Warren continued to live in the house after his grandmother died as she had “given him the house on her deathbed”. Joey married Janice and had three daughters. Joey still lives in the house, having spent all his life in the bay. The house has had the verandah filled in and has been recladded. His love of horses is evident by the fencing around the house area and horses grazing.
