No 2 Flowers Drive

This weatherboard and galvanised iron cottage was built between 1908-1915. The Wallarah Coal-mining Company built this cottage to house its mineworkers.

The first occupants of this house were the Payne family. The house was a shop. The Paynes also ran the picture show over the road. There were a number of children Reg, Prissy, Billy etc.

Mrs Bella Twyford moved into the shop with her children Dulcie, Lelia and Jim. When they moved to Cardiff Hector Hancock and Bluey (Elrisa), his wife, took over the shop. They had one boy, Colin.

Ronnie Flarty then bought the shop and many of the local girls worked in this shop as the Flartys also ran the shop at the Bay. The shop was eventually closed and the house became a private residence.

In 1964 the Coal Company ‘Coal & Allied’ subdivided some of its land. The Company determined that this house and land would be purchased for 400 pounds and bought by Mr M Flarty.

Mr Domenico Maio then owned the house and painted the weatherboards in multi colours

The house was purchased in 1994.
