No 32 Flowers Drive

This weatherboard and galvanised iron cottage was constructed between 1908-1915. The ‘Wallarah Coal-mining Company built this cottage to house its mineworkers.

The Crompton family first rented this house Mr Crompton is remembered for the beautiful pansies that he grew.

Bill and Olga Stevensen probably were the next tenants. Olga was a Plumridge from No 28. Olga and Bill probably lived in the house around 1920-22. Olga was 20 years older than Clarrie and their son Bill was only 3 years younger than Clarrie. The Stevenson’s then moved to Belmont.

The home was then occupied by the Peacocks, they had moved from across the railway line at Slack Alley adjacent to McKenzies. William Peacock (Pasha) died in this house in 1943 aged 61. Emma Peacock and son Les moved to no.19 Flowers Drive.

Around 1941-50 William George and Elizabeth Peacock moved to Swansea.

Ada, a Plumridge from No 28, and Fred Wiggs lived in No 32 for a time before moving to Lindsley Street.

The Hancock family then took up residence in 1949. Verley and Colin Hancock brought up two children Nina and Mark. Colin and Verley bought the house in 1964 for 400 pounds The Hancocks stayed at No 32 until 1978 when they moved to Nords Wharf.

Colin is the son of Hector and Ulrice Hancock who used to run the shop down the bottom of Flowers Drive.

The house was sold to Jan Plumridge in 1978.
