No 4 Northwood Rd

Only one family has lived in this house, the Anstruthers. David and Sarah (Sadie), except for a visit back to Scotland, lived in this house with their daughter Dorothea.  “Dora” was a very pretty girl and had an unusual accent, probably due to her Scottish ancestry.

Dave arrived from Scotland in 1926 and Sadie and Dora followed in the later part of 1927. Dora was enrolled in the Bay school in January 1929 which could mean the house was built around 1928 as the Anstruthers were the first occupants.

Nos 2,4 were t.he last two houses built in the town by the Wallarah Coal Mining Company. There is a water main situated beside the first house (Anstruthers) where Moonee creek water could be accessed if needed but neither of these houses was connected to it. At times of bushfire threats to the houses in Flowers Drive the fire brigade was known to gain water supplies from this point

Dora returned to live with her parents when her daughter Jill was 2 years old. Jill attended the Bay school.

Dave and Sadie had the very broad accents which seemed to get stronger as they aged. Dave was a keen sports man involved in the bowling club, soccer and tennis during his younger years.

David Anstruther was a mechanic in the top mine and he also dabbled in the hair cutting business on occasions. He was treasurer of the Bowling Club for 8 years and he also worked on the Cemetery Trust. The Cemetery was for many years looked after by volunteers who, long before the Victa – mower used a hand pushed lawn mowers to keep the grass down.  Jill returned to look after her aging grandparents and sold the house around 2010. The verandah was enclosed (possibly to house boarders from Scotland). Jill reopened the verandah. A garage was built in the 1950s by friends from the pit.
