No 7 Flowers Drive

This present two-story residence was built in 1976 by Mr and Mrs Bevan. It was purpose built as a shop on the ground floor with a residence above. The block of land was purchased from Coal & Allied for 2050 pounds, which was a great deal more than any of the houses had been sold for by the Company. It seems that many Company people were trying to buy land in Catherine Hill Bay and the Company was saying that there wasn’t any land to be bought. Mr and Mrs Bevan knew of this block and went to Sydney to see the Company Secretary. Mr Arthur Bevan went up to 2000 pounds and his offer was rejected, when Mrs Bevan asked if he would sell it for 2050 pounds he said sold to the lady, so strictly speaking it was not sold to a company man. The Bevans had to agree that a shop would be built on the block The land previously was part of the old hall grounds. A toilet block was at the rear of the land. This was removed to put in the septic tank. Mr and Mrs Bevan had previously run a shop across the road. They had taken over this business from the Mascords in 1969, and when the new shop was completed they moved their business across the road. They ran the shop for many years and then leased it. The shop was closed in 2004 due to the fall in trade with the closure of the mine.
