This weatherboard and galvanised iron cottage was built between 1908-1915. The Wallarah Coal-mining Company constructed this cottage for its mineworkers.
The first remembered tenants were the Hopkins family who had three girls and a boy. Esme, Doreen and Lil. The boy was Nor. Mr Hopkins bought 3 blocks of land in Moxey Street Swansea for 10 pounds a block. He built a house on one of the blocks and had a market garden on the other two blocks of land. Mr Hopkins continued to work at the mine walking to and from each day.
The Buchanan family came to the house after the Hopkins. Mr Buchanan was a miner. The parents were Hilda and Bob. The daughters, Thelma, Betty and Gwen all married. Gwen married Albert ‘Mody’ Henderson. The son, Lennie never married and continued to live in the house.
In 1964 the Coal Company ‘Coal & Allied’ subdivided some of its land. It was determined that Mr L J Buchanon would purchase this house and land for 400 pounds.
Mr Buchanon lived in this house until 2007 when he went into a nursing home.
The house was sold in December 2008 and is currently being restored..
