No 21 Flowers Drive

This weatherboard and galvanised iron cottage was built between 1908-1915. The Wallarah Coal-mining Company built this cottage to house its mineworkers.

Mrs Connar lived here. Her husband had died so she began Connar’s Shop. She had five sons and two daughters.  Bill, Fred, Tom, Jack and Micky. Mrs Connar had the right to deliver newspapers.

“Mrs Connar was a very strict shopkeeper and you minded you Ps and Qs when you went into the shop.

Micky became one of my closest friends and we sat together in class in 6th grade. Micky had the unenviable knack of getting into trouble in class and scarcely a day went past without him copping the cane and though it hurt very much it never seemed to bother Micky.”

Later Mrs Connar moved down to a shop opposite the Hall where she carried on business for many years.

After the Connars left Polly Neilson lived in the house and her sister in law Phyllis Neilson came in later.

In 1964 the Coal Company’ Coal & Allied’ subdivided some of its land. As Mrs Neilson was a miner’s widow she was allowed to purchase the house and land for 400 pounds.

Mr W.N Dent owned the house in 1994.

House resold.
