Mick Ryan (the baker, shop had a bakehouse as well)
Joseph Baxton Baker and his son Joseph Kitchener Baker( Jock) were the next tenants.
They were renowned fishermen and used to string the fish up along the back verandah. Jock later married Mary Darcy.
Mary, (nee Dyer), originally lived at Wyong and married Perc Darcy who lived in Chain Valley Bay. Perc had come down from Queensland and the couple moved to Catherine Hill Bay when their only child, Brian, was a year old. The Darcy family moved into No 20 Clarke Street. When Perc died Mary and Brian left the house to return to Wyong in 1946. Brian was 14 when his mother married Jock and returned to Catherine Hill Bay. Jock and Mary Baker lived in no. 11 Clarke Street for a time in the 1950s and 60s before moving in with Jock’s father in no 26.
Jock and Mary Baker had sold no. 11 Clarke Street to Mr Moffit for $4000 in the 1960s so they had the capital to renovate this house.
Jock employed the builder Ralph Lee from Nords Wharf to do the work. The main room is extremely large with a large fireplace. The kitchen was modernised with the old fuel stove being removed. The front and back verandahs were enclosed.
When Jock and later, Mary, died. Mary’s son Brian Darcy moved into the house. Except for the few years in Wyong Brian lived his life in the Bay. He died in December 2007 and the house was sold to Jan and Jorg Gartelmann.
The house was in a bad state and the Gartelmanns were allowed to rebuild but not enlarge, extend or change the original outward shape of the building, although a side deck was added and the northern wall partially opened to allow views of the sea (and pub).
The house has since been sold.
Behind the hotel is the only house in Fraser Street. (There was at one time another smaller house there but it has since been demolished)
Gillons who owned the shop lived there. A number of families have since occupied this private dwelling. When the Gillons left they sold the house to Perce and Alice Allen.
Perce and Alice Allen lived in this house with their daughter Pat and her younger brother plus Perc’s brother. The Allen family lived here for 7 years until they left to live in Belmont in December 1940.
The house was then rented to Jim and Bell Hampson. After they left old Mr and Mrs Hancock from ‘Lizzie Lakes’ (Lake Munmorah) lived here. When they left Marg and Ern Gill came into the house. Margaret was Mrs Gill’s cousin. Bill and Pearl Hacks lived there for a year pre 1968 when he was publican. The house was sold in 1968.
There are now lovely gardens (difficult with no town water supply)surrounding the house and it has been hardiplanked.
