This weatherboard and galvanised iron cottage was built between 1908-1915. The’ Wallarah Coal-mining Company’ constructed this cottage to house its mineworkers.
During World War One Lovey Hales and ‘Nigger’ Thompson lived in the house with three children.
Mrs Lewis then moved in with her three children. Lovey’s brother George Hale married Mrs Lewis and the family moved to Cessnock. Oscar, one of Mrs Lewis’ children became an entertainer in the Newcastle district.
The Isles family then moved into the house. Mrs Isles was previously married to a Mr Anderson and had two children from this marriage. Three more children resulted from the marriage to Mr Isles.
Bessie and Hugh Slaven were the next occupants of the house. There were two children; Barbara and Jimmy.
In 1964 the coal company ‘Coal & Allied’ subdivided some of its land. The Company determined that this house and land would be purchased for 400 pounds by Mrs E Slavin. Bessie and Barbara continued to live in the house until she got a Housing Commission house and then she moved to Windale.
House sold in 1991.
The house has been extended and renovated with French doors replacing the front windows.
