No 54 Flowers Drive

This weatherboard and galvanised iron cottage was constructed in 1917.The ‘Wallarah Coal-mining Company’ built this three-bedroom cottage to house its mineworkers.

The Lawsons were the first remembered tenants followed by

Clarrie and Vili Jones.

Jim and Lizzie Mclean and their daughter Robyn were the next tenants.

Mrs Mclean was instrumental in arranging many musical events in the Bay over many years at the hall. Deb balls, fancy dress frolics and musical nights were all events loved by the locals and well attended. She was a fine pianist and taught piano to local children

Jim McLean was a tireless worker for the bowling club and a handy builder. His daughter had a play ground constructed in the back yard consisting of a very high slippery dip and equally high double swing set made by him. Long after Robyn had outgrown them any child could drop in for a slide or a swing, however as time went on the splinters were a problem.

Jim had a door in the side of the house where men could enter his barber shop room which was a sideline he had for many years.

Robyn went on to nursing and eventually became Matron of Belmont Hospital before she married and moved to Canberra.

In 1964 the coal company ‘Coal & Allied’ subdivided some of its land. The Company Determined that this house and land would be purchased for 400 pounds by Mrs E M McLean.

House has been sold.
