No 74 Flowers Drive

Next house was a boarding house run by Jaquaman (paymaster). After this it became the Maternity Hospital run by Nurse Turode. The first baby she delivered was Jim Outram in 1934. Most women in Catherine Hill Bay had their babies here and some women from Swansea whose husband’s worked in the mine also came. Nurse Turode married Charles in 1932. He was known as Henty and worked as an ostler at the mine. Henty had a problem with one of his legs and was given the job of gardner at the mine managers house in his later years before retirement. There was only one child, a daughter, Jean. There was also a boarder who lived with the family for many years. Nurse Turode is also remembered as having a large collection of magazines, and on the wall in the kitchen was an wind up handle telephone.  The maternity hospital closed in 1950. She gave a ‘cosy-bye’ to Sybil Mascord to use for her new son Gary. Nurse Turode died on 23rd November in 1963
