This is a weatherboard cottage built around 1889 by the Wallarah Coal-mining Company to house its mineworkers.
Mr and Mrs Thomas are remembered as the first tenants and then Mr and Mrs Moffit. After they left Joe and Lena Diver moved in and had two sons. Joe and Mat. Mr Diver was considerably older than his wife who had a daughter Jean from a previous relationship. Eldest son Joe married Janice Hooey and Mat married Carol Knowles, both Bay girls.
Mat Diver is remembered for his wonderful collection of memorabilia spanning many years all contained in the “Bay Book”.
In 1964 the Coal Company ‘Coal & Allied’ subdivided some of its land. This house and land was to be purchased for 350 pounds by Mr Joe Diver.
The land measures 54 feet 51/4 inches across at the front and 53 feet 61/4 inches along the rear. The length of the block is just over 165 feet.
When Mr and Mrs Diver died the house was left to Mrs Diver’s daughter Jean. When Jean died it was left to Mat and he then sold the property in 1989.
The house was again sold in 2003 and is currently a long-term rental.
